Clearwater Canyon

Our Story

In 2002 the paths of the eight members of the Clearwater Canyon Winery crossed in the historic district of Lewiston Idaho. All were dreaming of fine wine made in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley and of future vineyards on the slopes of the Clearwater River.

The discovery of Lewiston’s wine history was in large part the impetus for pursuing our vision. It is apparent that the Clearwater Canyons have a unique and rich contribution to Northwest winemaking and we are excited to revitalize the region’s interest in grape cultivation as well as its pallet for fine wine.

In 2004 as local vineyards were maturing, we crushed premium grapes from the renowned Horse Heaven Hills AVA in Washington. With the direction of our young winemaker, inspired by her experience working side-by-side with some of Walla Walla’s top winemakers and incorporating her formal education, our first vintage was diligently crafted to utilize the intrinsic fullness of these already proven Northwest grapes.

In 2005 the production of local vineyards made up a significant portion of our crush enabling us to present a vineyard select Merlot from grapes grown right here in the valley. By 2007 half of our production came from local vineyards. We will continue to pursue excellence in full lush blends and stand alone varietals from local vineyards as well as a few select vineyards from central Washington. In 2008 we expect 70% of our production to come from vineyards within the LC Valley and Clearwater River Canyon.
